Call Today: Last Chance to #PassTheCCIA

Last Chance to #PassTheCCIA

A contingent (Alan Cole, Craig Cureau, Shirley Knop, Mona Perrotti) from the IMV Climate Crisis Working Group joined NY Renews' first in-person action in over a year in Albany to push for passage of the CCIA.

  • If you are on Twitter, please use #NYRenews, #ClimateJobsandJustice, and #PassTheCCIA to get the word out about this important event.

A sit-in was held outside the NYS Business Council (the source of many lies about the CCIA-- #BizCouncilLiesKill), followed by a rally at the Capitol, remarks by Assembly members Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas and Harvey Epstein, and a die-in from which activists arose and promised to return until the CCIA is passed.

  • IMV members should continue to call their Assembly members, Senators, Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Speaker Carl Heastie, and Gov. Cuomo and say, "Pass the CCIA now!" And at the same time tell them to pass the Teachers Fossil Fuel Divestment Act.

"The Closest We Have Every Been": Let's Pass the NY Health Act

New York is closer than ever before to passing the NY Health Act. This legislation would provide guaranteed, comprehensive healthcare that INCLUDES long-term home and community-based care to all New Yorkers, regardless of income. According to IMV activist, Teresa Van Etten, "We are closer than we have ever been to getting the NY Health Act passed."  With just days left to the legislative session, the call to pass the NY Health Act is becoming more and more urgent.

Teresa Van Etten, Jill Farnham-Us, and Sylvia De Swaan are going to Albany June 7th for NY Health Act rally.  IMV contributed $300 to Campaign for NY to support this mass rally on Monday.

IMV Meeting June 15th: See You at Cherrywood

We're back in person at Cherrywood for our June 15th meeting!  We will be outside under the Pavilion for the fourth anniversary of our June 2017 meeting when we officially named Indivisible Mohawk Valley as an activism group for progressive local politics.  We'll hear some important updates, make plans for saving democracy (Deadline for Democracy!), and get organized for supporting local candidates in their campaigns.  Please make a note of the meeting on your calendar, and spread the word.

Letters to the Editor

May 30th was a great day in the Utica OD, when Barbara Gold's letter to the editor, "What is wrong with the Republican Party?" was published. It was a perfect example of calling out Mitch McConnell's refusal to help the American people as reported in a news item published by the paper on a specific date.  Scroll down and you'll see a wonderful anti-Tenney letter from a Debra Lopata of Whitesboro as well.

IMV has a letter writing group and network of LtE editors. Please email IndivisibleMV@gmail.com if you want assistance in writing your next letter to the editor.

Deadline for Democracy

If you were on the Indivisible National Activist Call last night, you heard from Leah Greenberg about the work that is piling up to save democracy.  If S1 For the People Act does not pass in July, it may land on a back burner.  Republicans, using voter suppression laws, gerrymandering, big money, and the Big Lie, will dominate state and national electoral politics for decades to come even though they have a smaller and smaller portion of the electorate.

Leah asked us whether we are ready for the toughest legislative fight of our lives.  Please get ready to pull out all the stops on creative actions, tactics, and demonstrations in late June and early July.   Deadline for Democracy legislative recess actions will occur from June 28-July 10.

In the meantime, please make sure that you are calling Sen. Schumer to push him on S1 For the People Act to save Democracy from the power of money, Republican white supremacy, and voter suppression.  Click here to call or email Senator Schumer to let him know you support The For the People Act to protect democracy.

Please note: S1 For the People Act and S4 John Lewis Voting Act are not interchangeable. S4 is defensive (Justice Department can investigate violations of voting rights), but S1 is offensive and far more comprehensive.  Schumer must not wait to bring S1 to vote, and he needs to be willing to end the filibuster to get it passed.

Time is of the Essence

We all take a break sometimes from making regular calls to our elected representatives. This week can't be one of those times. Please make your calls to state reps about the CCIA and the NY Health Act. There are only days left before the legislative session ends in Albany on June 10th. Make your calls to Sen. Schumer and Sen. Gillibrand as well; they need to know that we are not letting them off the hook on S1 or the filibuster.

If you need some activist energy and motivation, pop into CAFE Friday this morning at 9:30 am, or join the Black Lives Matter stand for racial justice in Clinton 4-5 pm today. Everything we are working on is tied critically to racial justice and that includes climate, health care, and voting rights and protections. Democracy is not only a spectator sport, it is under duress, and the risk is existential. Let's get ready for the legislative fight of our lives!
