March Madness, Petitions, Canvassing, Phone calls

Petitions, Canvassing, and Phone Calls

Notes from Sarah Reeske
I have absolutely loved seeing so many group leaders in person at the NY22 Summit (Feb 4) and NY19 Summit (Feb 19) that I’m giddy with excitement to attend and see even more of you at the Long Island Grassroots Organizing Summit this Saturday in Huntington!

I have lots of updates for you in this email and all of it can be shared with your group members. I’ve also updated the #AllTheThings doc for you that includes the following and more.

Statewide Call - Thursday, March 23rd, 6-7pm, register here
This is a space for Indivisibles who are eager to help in local school board races this year. March is when candidates are starting to declare and the ramp up to election day begins. Come to this space if you have questions about anything related to school boards and/or if you have knowledge to share with others. I’m looking forward to learning what questions people have so I can help find the answers!

Rural Call - Tuesday, March 28th, 7-8pm, register here
Our Rev Up Rural Organizing call series is back for 2023! Join us for a conversation with Indivisibles in rural Georgia as we learn about what’s been working for them as they helped flip GA blue in 2020 and 2022. How can we do the same in rural NY? Let’s find out.

Indivisible OneNYS call with Lt. Gov Antonio Delgado - Save the date, April 18th
I’m still waiting for final, final confirmation, but we’re working towards our statewide meeting with Antonio Delgado to be Tuesday, April 18th (ideally 6-7pm). I will send out registration info as soon as the date and time are locked in.

Actions to Take

You have probably heard or seen that MAGA Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene called for the dissolution of the United States in a Monday morning tweet.  It's not the first time she has used her social media platform and high visibility in Congress to threaten the nation.  And still, Speaker McCarthy appointed her to the House Oversight and Homeland Security committees and Republicans in Congress ignore the danger she poses within the house and on social media.  On Wednesday, Indivisibles across the country got an email requesting that we take the specific action of calling our Republican members of Congress. So, it's our job now to call Brandon Williams (or Elise Stefanik) and ask their staff whether they too support the dissolution of the United States of America, and if not, then will they 1) make a public condemnation and 2) demand Kevin McCarthy remove her from her committee assignments.

1. Call your Republican representative, tell them to condemn Marjorie Taylor Greene’s comments, and demand they make Kevin McCarthy take action.

Click the link above, fill in your address, and you'll be connected to the House switchboard.  Follow Ezra's script. It's easy, and this is pressure we can exert.

2. Get ready for a month of petitioning--starting Tuesday, February 28. It's time to collect signatures to get candidates on the ballot (or ourselves onto Dem committees). When we collect signatures, it's not just about getting candidates on the ballot, though. It's about that first pass at connecting with registered voters, letting them know what is happening in the upcoming election, and listening to their concerns and priorities.  It's about building relationships with voters so that they have a connection year round, not just the week before the November election.

So mark off some days to do this important work in the coming month, pull on your boots, head outside. Candidates need you.  Voters need you. Thanks for all you do to strengthen our democracy.  As you know...

It's not a spectator sport.

CAFE IS FOR EVERYONE
Every Friday morning from 9:30 until we are ready to eat lunch, we meet on zoom to discuss and support each other in our activism.  Some of us are canvassing and petitioning, some are texting and tweeting, some are sending postcards around the country.  We have also had time with local candidates who want to get to know us and let us know them. Everyone is welcome to join the conversation, you can drop in at a time that is convenient for you.  Your voice counts, and every listener helps strengthen our democracy.  We are all activists, and we are all individuals, so be aware that we do not always agree about all the details.  We learn from each other, and are stronger and smarter together. Come on down, you are welcome to the CAFE.
