We are against repealing the Affordable Care Act. We want to see the New York Health Act move out of committee in the New York State Senate and pass, bringing single-payer healthcare to all residents of New York State and, ultimately, the rest of the country. We have a subcommittee on this topic, and new members are welcome. Please send us a message through our “Contact Us” form if you are interested in joining this subcommittee.
Voting Rights and Election Reform
We believe that voting is the foundation of our democracy. Today, we as Americans, must safeguard our democracy by preserving and expanding the right to vote for every eligible citizen. Through practical policy proposals, advocacy, and engagement with the public, we need to ensure that voting is free, fair, and accessible for all Americans. We believe Congress should pass the Automatic Voter Registration Act, a proposal which will save money, increase accuracy of voter rolls and voter participation.
The Climate Crisis Working Group is made up of passionate people working together on climate change mitigation and adaptation through education, legislation, and other actions in our communities, our state, and our nation. We are always welcoming new members. Please send us a message through our Contact Us form or send an e-mail to Maggie Reilly at Margaret_reilly@mac.com if you would like to join this active group to make a difference for the future of the next generations and our planet.
We support a comprehensive, streamlined, and simple process for refugees and immigrants to become U.S. citizens. Many of our members volunteer for the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees. We are thrilled that the city of Utica passed a Welcoming City resolution in June, 2018. We know that diversity is a strength in our community.
Our Women’s Issues subcommittee explores all topics of concern to women. Donald Trump and the Republican Congress continue their assault on women every time they try to limit funding for teen pregnancy prevention and Planned Parenthood, which provides primary care to millions of women. Women deserve equal pay, a living wage, accessible child care, and equal protection under the law. If this is your passion and you would like to join this subcommittee, please send us a message through the “Contact Us” form.
IMV is supporting the leadership of CNY Citizen Action in advocating for equity and inclusion in our public schools. Currently we’re lobbying for the Utica City School District to receive the millions of dollars of foundation aid owed to it by New York State. We’re also advocating for increased parent and community participation in developing school district policy, particularly in the area of the Code of Conduct. We’d like to work with the district to develop a Code informed by the idea of restorative justice, rather than the punitive, zero-tolerance tone of the current Code. If you’d like to be part of this work, please contact us through CNY Citizen Action.
